Hungary student visa and health insurance rules for Bangladeshi students

Quick answer: To study in Hungary you need a residence permit for the purpose of studies (you usually enter with a D visa and collect the permit card in Hungary). For it, Hungary's immigration office asks for proof of comprehensive health insurance covering all healthcare services — or proof that you can pay for healthcare yourself. Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders get health insurance through the scholarship.

Hungary is popular with Bangladeshi students, especially through the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship. This guide explains the visa steps and — most importantly — which health insurance Hungary actually wants.

How the Hungary student visa works

  1. Get your admission from a Hungarian university (or your Stipendium Hungaricum award letter).
  2. Apply for the residence permit for studies at the Hungarian mission that serves Bangladesh. Book an appointment before you submit.
  3. Get a D visa to enter Hungary once the permit is approved.
  4. Enter Hungary and collect your residence permit card — Hungarian embassies say you have 30 days from entry to collect it.
  5. Extensions later are done online through Hungary's Enter Hungary system.

Where to apply: Bangladesh is served by the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi, with applications taken in Dhaka. Check the current appointment system on the VFS Global Hungary page for Bangladesh or with the embassy before you go.

The documents you usually need

  • Residence permit application form, signed
  • Valid passport and passport photo
  • Admission or student status letter from the university (or scholarship award letter)
  • Proof of accommodation in Hungary
  • Proof of money for living costs, accommodation, return travel and healthcare (bank statements; scholarship letter if you have one)
  • Police clearance certificate
  • Health insurance — see below
  • Certificates attested by Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, if asked

The exact list can differ — always follow the checklist your appointment centre gives you.

The health insurance rule — explained simply

Hungary's National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (the immigration office) asks for proof that you have:

  • ✓ comprehensive health insurance covering all healthcare services, or
  • ✓ enough money to pay for healthcare yourself.

"Comprehensive" is the key word. A normal travel policy mainly pays for emergencies (sudden illness, accidents, hospital, going home). It is not the same as insurance that covers all healthcare. Hungarian universities warn that not every insurance product is accepted for the permit.

Where a MIIPLC policy helps

We want you to buy the right thing, so here it is plainly:

  • Visiting Hungary or Europe (Schengen C visa): MIIPLC's Schengen policy — €30,000, valid in all Schengen countries, QR code on every certificate — meets the standard visa rule. 14 days cost 1,687 BDT (ages up to 40, including VAT, prices checked 23 October 2026).
  • Travelling to start your studies: a travel policy covers medical emergencies on the journey and in your first weeks, until your Hungarian cover starts.
  • For the residence permit itself: ask your university or the immigration office whether a travel policy is accepted before you rely on it. We will not promise what only they can decide.
