Quick answer: To get an Italian student visa from Bangladesh you need travel medical insurance of at least €30,000, valid in all Schengen countries, for your whole planned stay. After you arrive in Italy you need health cover again for your residence permit — most students join Italy's public health service (SSN) for €700 a year. For the 2026/27 intake, the visa deadline is 30 November 2026.
You have your admission letter. Universitaly is done. Now the visa checklist asks for "health insurance" — but how much, for how long, and what happens after you land in Rome or Milan? This guide answers all of it in plain words, step by step.

You need insurance twice — here is why
Most students think insurance is one paper for the visa. In Italy it is two steps:
| Step 1 — Before you fly | Step 2 — After you arrive | |
|---|---|---|
| What for | Student visa (Type D) at VFS Dhaka | Residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) |
| When | Before your VFS appointment | Within 8 working days of arriving in Italy |
| What works | A €30,000 Schengen travel medical policy | Italy's public health service (SSN), or a policy the police office accepts |
Get Step 1 right and your visa file is safe. Plan Step 2 early and you will not be stuck without a doctor in Italy.
Step 1: insurance for the visa — 6 things to check
The VFS Global checklist for Italian study visas in Dhaka asks for a policy that covers medical treatment, hospital stays and repatriation up to €30,000, valid across the Schengen area. Before you submit, tick every line:
- ✓ At least €30,000 medical cover.
- ✓ Valid in all Schengen countries — not Italy only.
- ✓ Covers your whole planned stay — not just the first month.
- ✓ Includes repatriation — the cost of sending you home if you fall seriously ill.
- ✓ Name and passport number exactly as in your passport.
- ✓ Written in English (or Italian).
How long should your policy be?
Short answer: take 12 months. The VFS checklist asks for cover for your whole planned stay, and a study visa is for a full academic year. A one-year policy matches that and also covers your first months in Italy.
| Your situation | What to buy |
|---|---|
| Normal university course (Bachelor's or Master's) | 12 months — the safe choice |
| Your VFS checklist or appointment letter clearly says the first 6 months is enough | 6 months |
| Short course, exchange or one semester | The exact length of the course |
| Anything you are unsure about | 12 months — a shorter policy is the most common reason a file comes back |
Do not buy a 30-day or 90-day "travel" policy for a study visa. It does not match a year of study.
What it costs
These are MIIPLC's Student plan prices for Schengen countries (€30,000 cover), including 15% VAT, for a student aged up to 40:
| Policy length | Price |
|---|---|
| 3 months | 7,600 BDT |
| 6 months | 15,201 BDT |
| 12 months | 30,404 BDT |
Prices checked 19 October 2026. Your exact figure depends on your age and dates.
Step 2: health insurance while you study in Italy
Within 8 working days of arriving you must apply for your residence permit (permesso di soggiorno). The police office (Questura) checks that you have health cover. Italy's official rules for 2026/27 accept three kinds of cover:
- Italy's public health service (SSN) — you register and pay a yearly fee.
- A foreign policy that is valid in Italy and has no limits or exceptions on emergency hospital costs for its whole term.
- An Italian private policy with a declaration from the insurer saying the same.
Most students from Bangladesh choose the SSN. Here is how the options compare:
| SSN (public) | Italian private policy | Policy from home | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | €700 a year | Varies by company | You already bought it for the visa |
| Family doctor | Yes, free | Depends on the policy | No — it pays for emergencies |
| Best for | Living in Italy long term | Students who want private hospitals | Your first months, until you join the SSN |
What is the SSN and how do you join?
The SSN (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale) is Italy's public health service. As a member you get a family doctor, hospital care and medicines at the same cost as Italians.
- Apply for your residence permit and keep the receipt.
- Pay the yearly fee — €700 in 2026 for students with no income other than scholarships.
- Go to your local health office (ASL) with your receipt, passport, tax code (codice fiscale) and university enrolment.
- Choose a family doctor. Your cover starts only after this step — paying alone is not enough.
ℹ️ Good to know: SSN membership runs by calendar year (January to December) and cannot be split — €700 buys the same January-to-December year whether you join in February or in October. If you arrive late in the year, ask your university's international office or the Questura whether your 12-month policy from home is enough for the permit until January. If they say no, join the SSN straight away.
The whole journey in 8 steps
- Get admission from an Italian university.
- Pre-enrol on Universitaly with the email you check every day.
- Get your Declaration of Value or CIMEA certificate for your certificates.
- Buy your insurance — 12 months, €30,000, all Schengen. Do it now, not after the VFS email.
- Wait for the VFS email. VFS Global contacts Universitaly-registered students to book a slot. You do not need to request an appointment separately.
- Submit your file at VFS Dhaka before 30 November 2026.
- Arrive in Italy and apply for your residence permit within 8 working days.
- Join the SSN and choose a family doctor (or from January — see the tip above).

6 common mistakes — and how to avoid them
| Mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Buying a 30-day or 90-day policy | Buy 12 months — the VFS checklist asks for your whole stay |
| A policy for Italy only | It must say all Schengen countries |
| Name or passport number spelled differently | Copy them exactly from your passport |
| Start date that doesn't match your travel date | Start the policy on the day you plan to enter Italy |
| "Free" insurance from an agency that nobody can verify | Buy from a licensed insurer whose certificate can be checked |
| Buying insurance after the VFS email arrives | Buy it right after Universitaly — VFS slots can come at short notice |
Is Bangladeshi insurance accepted?
Yes. VFS Global's Italy centre in Dhaka keeps a list of Bangladeshi insurance companies for visa applicants, and MIIPLC is on it — at number 11, under our former name "Mercentile Insurance Company Ltd." (the list still uses the old spelling). The list is for reference: a genuine policy that meets the rules above is what matters.
Why students choose a MIIPLC policy:
- €30,000 medical cover for all Schengen countries, up to one year.
- A QR code on every certificate, so VFS or the embassy can check it is genuine.
- Licensed by IDRA, Shariah-based, with an AA credit rating.
- Buy online and pay by bKash, Nagad, card or internet banking — the certificate usually arrives within minutes.
