Student travel insurance for UK and Australia — MIIPLC

Quick answer: Australia makes OSHC compulsory for a student visa, and it has to come from an approved Australian provider. For the UK you pay the IHS with your visa and get NHS access. Travel insurance replaces neither — it covers a different gap: the journey itself, your luggage, the first days before your cover kicks in, and trips home during your studies.

The bags are almost packed. Visa granted, ticket booked. And now the one question your parents keep circling back to — what happens if something goes wrong over there?

More than fifty thousand Bangladeshi students head abroad for higher studies every year. The UK takes the largest share, then the US, then Australia. Health arrangements in those countries work quite differently from one another, and that's where most families get confused.

Let's clear up one big misunderstanding first

A lot of people assume that buying a travel insurance policy ticks the health box. It doesn't. Both the UK and Australia have their own arrangements for international students, and travel insurance is not a substitute for either.

Getting this straight early saves money and a fair bit of stress.

Australia: no OSHC, no visa

OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) is compulsory for an Australian student visa. You need it in place when you apply, and it has to cover the full length of your course.

Here's the part that matters: OSHC must come from an Australian approved provider — Medibank, Bupa, Allianz Care, nib, ahm and similar. A travel insurance policy bought in Bangladesh, ours included, does not satisfy the OSHC requirement. If anyone tells you their travel policy will get you an Australian student visa, don't believe it.

Most universities arrange OSHC for you as part of enrolment; otherwise you buy it directly from an approved provider's website.

The UK: pay the IHS, use the NHS

The UK works differently. With your visa application you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), and that gives you access to the NHS much like a local resident.

So a separate health policy usually isn't necessary for the UK. That said, the NHS doesn't cover everything immediately — dental, optical and some prescriptions come with charges — and registering with a GP after you arrive can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.

So where does travel insurance fit

This is the useful bit. OSHC and the NHS look after your health while you're studying. There are a few things neither one touches, and that's exactly the space travel insurance fills.

The journey. Everything from leaving home to settling in at the other end. A cancelled flight, falling ill during a long transit, an accident on the way — all of it can happen before your OSHC has even started.

Your luggage. Students effectively pack their whole life into two bags — clothes, laptop, documents. Lose them or have them delayed and you're replacing everything at foreign prices. This isn't a hypothetical; it happens to someone every intake.

The gap in the middle. Between landing and having a GP registration or OSHC card in hand, there's a stretch of days where you're not really covered by anything. Travel insurance answers that.

A lost passport. Losing your passport in a country you've just arrived in is a serious headache — one that costs both money and time.

Trips home. If you come back during breaks, those journeys need cover too. More than once a year and an annual multi-trip plan starts making sense.

The short version: they're not competing products. They complement each other.

Cost, and buying it

The premium depends on how many days you're covering, your age, and the limit you choose. Students are usually young, so rates come out on the lower side. Whether you cover just the journey or your first few weeks is up to how cautious you want to be.

Buying takes a few minutes online. Put in your dates and details, the premium appears, and if it looks right you pay by bKash, Nagad or card. The certificate normally arrives the same day.

Two things to do before you fly: keep a copy of the certificate on your phone, and save the 24/7 assistance number. Hunting for either in an emergency wastes the time you don't have.

Frequently asked questions

Will your travel insurance satisfy the Australian student visa requirement?

No. Australia requires OSHC from an approved Australian provider. Our travel insurance is not a substitute — it covers the journey, your luggage and the gap before your cover starts.

Do I need separate health insurance to study in the UK?

Usually not — paying the IHS with your visa gives you NHS access. Travel insurance is still useful for the journey, baggage and your first days after arrival.

What is the IHS?

The Immigration Health Surcharge, paid with a UK visa application, which gives you NHS access. Students pay a discounted rate. Check the official UK government site for current amounts.

Where do I buy OSHC?

From an Australian approved provider such as Medibank, Bupa, Allianz Care, nib or ahm. Many universities arrange it during enrolment.

Then why buy travel insurance at all?

For emergencies during the journey, lost baggage and passport, flight cancellation, and the period before OSHC or NHS access is active — none of which those schemes cover.

How many days should I cover?

At least the journey plus your first few weeks. Some students cover the first month so they're protected until they've settled in.

What about flying home during breaks?

If you travel back more than once a year, an annual multi-trip plan usually works out cheaper.

Is my laptop covered?

Baggage and personal belongings are covered on many plans, though single high-value items often have their own limit. Check the policy schedule before buying.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Usually excluded or limited. Declare anything ongoing before you buy.

How much does it cost?

It depends on age, duration and coverage limit. The online quote tool gives you the exact figure.

What about studying in Germany?

That works differently again — see our Germany study visa guide.

How fast do I get the certificate?

Usually the same day, within minutes of payment.

Before you fly

Studying abroad comes with a mountain of paperwork and cost, and the insurance part is easy to muddle. So, in one line: Australia requires OSHC, the UK takes the IHS, and travel insurance covers the gap between and around them.

Three separate things, each with its own job.
